Developing kids In & Out of the classroom want to know that…

Through the ages, Abe Lincoln carries the reputation as a brilliant leader. Brilliant leaders are often credited with above normal abilities…such as learning. It leaves us with the mistaken impression that learning came easy. We come to believe Abe effortlessly solved countless problems with his endless thinking ability. We come to believe that very successful people of history have more ability than ourselves so reaching high levels of success is simply not in the cards.

But, IT IS NOT TRUE!

Yes, successful people have ability. The true magic to their success was taking their ability to a higher level. They did this with hard work!!!

One of Lincoln’s abilities was learning, but he had to work hard at learning. Spend time on it, read material several times! In his own words, Lincoln compared his learning ability to scratching a mark into steel. “It takes a long time to make the mark, but when it finally gets there, it stays.” That is effort! Working hard and knowing your brain WANTS to work hard.

Hard At Work or Hardly Working

To prove my point look at what Lincoln’s secretary wrote in his diary. He reported how Abe skipped meals, worked all hours of the night, and would fall asleep at his desk learning military strategy. The man worked hard!

As a practicing lawyer he dedicated leisure time to learning math. I know, learning math, on weekends! His law partner checked on him one night to find paper all over the floor with math problems. He looked at Lincoln and his shirt was wet with sweat.

He amped up his effort and when it was difficult…he did not run away. He gave his brain the task of learning military strategy and worked at it. His brain did what it naturally wants to do…meet the challenge, learn, stumble, learn from the stumble and grow!

AMP it up!
